M/Y Elixir: Global GRATitini

8 May 2020

What better antidote to the coronavirus than a delicious cocktail? While alcohol might not eliminate the virus, it could go a long way to curing your COVID-19 blues. But not just any drink will do — we gathered only those concoctions created by the finest mixologists on the water.

For BOAT International’s Virtual BOAT Show Quarantine Cocktail Contest last week, crewmembers from 17 yachts around the globe created delightful, tasty offerings. They jumped at the challenge to find inspiration on board and craft a new Quarantini, using no more than five ingredients and only what was currently on the vessel. We’ll be sharing their creations, inspirations, and how you can make your own in the coming days, so be sure to keep checking Dockwalk.com.

Each drink was judged on creativity, method, and look by cocktail bartender Ryan Chetiyawardana, aka Mr. Lyan, 2019 World’s Most Influential Bar Personality (among other titles) and owner of Super Lyan, Dandelyan, and cocktail restaurant Cub.

The drink that impressed him with its fun and inventive recipe was the “Global GRATitini,” created by Chief Stewardess Samantha Klepper, Second Stewardess Peta Harding, Stewardess Jen Firth, and Stewardess Serena Andrassy of 55-meter Amels M/Y Elixir.

Global GRATitini

It didn’t take us long to figure out how we could honor the REAL heroes of this pandemic, the healthcare workers around the globe working tirelessly to care for our loved ones and keep us safe. What better way to show our gratitude than to dress like superheroes to represent them and create a Quarantine GRATitini in their honor?

We loved the challenge! We were over halfway through our Atlantic crossing when this contest was announced, so we had to really get creative with the ingredients we had on hand. It actually came together beautifully, though, as the raw ingredients the chef had available were all immune-boosting and tied in with our theme. We have two fairly recent additions to our interior team, so we were most grateful for the team-building opportunity this presented. Being in a worldwide quarantine is the last thing any of us could’ve predicted. We’ve been doing lots of training in our down time, but it was nice to create the real thing. The girls really got into it and it’s made us more confident and excited than ever to start the next charter season together!

To emphasize the intention that this cocktail would be one that we serve to healthcare workers to show our gratitude, we wanted to build an immune-boosting elixir as our Quarantini. We chose nutrient-rich, fresh ingredients, such as ginger, beetroot, and lemon juice known for their numerous health benefits.

Ingredients:
Layer 1:
2.5 oz Campari
1 ¼ oz Ginger Syrup
¾ oz Lemon Juice
¼ oz Beetroot Juice

Layer 2:
1 Large Egg White
0.5 oz Campari
0.5 oz Lemon Juice
0.5 oz Ginger Syrup

Method:
Step 1: Add all fresh ingredients for the first layer into a shaker, top with ice, shake, and strain (double strain to ensure lemon pulp is removed).
Step 2: Add all fresh ingredients for the second layer into a shaker, dry shake vigorously, and top the cocktail. If you want to get fancy, you can add the ingredients for the second layer into an ISI charger to thicken the foam!
Step 3: To complete the homage-paying GRATitini, we created a garnish using a citrus rind cut in the shape of a medic cross and colored it red with edible tinting powder!
