Prima Palma Provisioning

27 April 2010 By Joanne MacKenzie

alma, the capital of Mallorca, is one of the biggest centres of yachting in the Balearic Islands of Spain. There are a lot of yacht purveyors and local sources for provisions.

If you don’t mind pushing shopping carts up and down multiple escalators, you can find a wide variety of grocery items at the Carrefour in the Porto Pi shopping mall. It’s a good source for dairy items, general dry stores, international products and small appliances and offers a great deli and wine selection. Another plus is it's close proximity to the marinas and Palma shipyard.

Another department store that stocks a lot of gourmet items is El Corte Ingles. You can get international specialty items, good oils and high-quality Jamon iberico, chorizo sausages and Serrano ham. The Mercadona located in Plaza de Olivar is a large supermarket with fresh, frozen and many international foods. The quality is consistent and there is a large variety of items to choose from.

VSF’s partner in Mallorca is Ruth Kirwan of Essentials Yacht Provisioning or EYP. She has a wide selection of gourmet products and frozen patisserie, meat and fish. She can vacuum package items in whatever sizes you need. Kirwan also provides galley equipment and tableware, cleaning products, dry stores and wine and other beverages. You can email Ruth at info@eyp-mallorca.com or call +34971870640.

Shore Solutions now has a Palma office. You can contact them at info@shoresolutionsuk.com. They have an online catalogue and can ship anywhere in the Balearics from their offices in Nice.

If you are looking for English sausages, ribs, great lamb or meat pies, try the English Butcher in Puerto Portals. AA Dunn is a quality butcher and the meat there is better than anything you will find in the supermarkets. You can reach the shop at +34971677503.

Another source for British products, with everything from cereal to clotted cream, is The British Food Shop in Puerto Pollensa. You can contact them via email, rex@thebfs.e.telefonica.net, or telephone +34971865386.

Fosh Food is a boutique deli and catering service that also offers yacht provisions. It’s a good source for caviar, sushi quality fish, oils and vinegars and Champagnes. You can get just about any specialty item you need from Kevin, but in some cases, he may need a week in advance to order it. You can email Kevin@foshfood.com or call +34971290108.

Chef Bruno Canillac at Crème de la Crème is a great source if you're in need of wine or specialty gourmet items. He also offers catering services. You can reach him at +34971513288.

Nice Price Inter Globe Imports SL is one of the largest imported food retailers in Mallorca. David and Helen Jury have a comprehensive selection of British foods and frozen foods and offer delivery service. You can reach them at +34971677563.

Chablis and Salmon offer a wide selection of world wines including Mallorcan and mainland Spain wines. They also carry some gourmet food items. You can contact Peter Whitehead at +34971611848.

If you're in need of ingriedent from the Orient, there is an Asian grocery store on the waterfront about halfway between the shipyard and Porto Pi. There is a 24-hour pharmacy across from Porto Pi.

For reasonably priced linens, galley and interior supplies, there is an IKEA shop near Palma. IKEA also sells specialty Swedish food products.

BWA Yachting is another source when provisioning in Palma. Some of the best outlets to purchase produce, fish and meat or general food items in Palma is the market of Santa Catalina. The market is just a short walk from the port and BWA has direct relationships with all the local stands. Chefs can make their selections and then BWA will take care of billing and delivering the items to the yacht. For visiting crew, it is important to remember that Palma is an island and many products commonly requested by yachts have to be shipped in from Barcelona. BWA can get most items to Palma within 24 to 48 hours, but for more particular items the trick is to anticipate and call ahead to ensure you get things on time.
