Fatal Yacht Crash

23 June 2009

A small yacht ran aground off Corsica yesterday, killing one man.

According the rescue coordinators Le Cross-Med en Corse (the Corsican coast guard), a Mayday came in at 6:10 p.m. on Monday, June 22 from Nine Moon. The motor yacht apparently was underway when it hit some rocks on the north side of Cavallo Island, off the southeast coast of Corsica. “We think it was running fast due to the damage of the hull,” says a Cross-Med official. Conflicting reports describe the yacht as either 22 or 27 meters.

There were a total of nine people on board at the time of the incident. A 60-year-old man died, a woman suffered injuries to her face and was evacuated to a hospital in Bonifacio and three others were evacuated in a state a shock.

The accident is currently under investigation by the French gendarmerie.
