9 February 2026 By Staff Report

Online marine security training group VIRSEC has unveiled a new e-learning course, Introduction to Sexual Harassment in the Maritime Workplace, aimed at fostering a safer and more inclusive environment for crew and shore-based maritime personnel. The course, which is accessible online, is designed to address the pressing issue of sexual harassment in the maritime sector, aligning with emerging International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Labour Organization (ILO) expectations, as well as industry best practices.

The course is designed to complement existing safety, HR and leadership programs. By raising awareness and promoting accountability, it aims to empower crew and shore-based staff to recognize inappropriate behavior, respond effectively and follow clear reporting protocols.

The course offers scenario-based content, knowledge checks and a certificate of completion. Coursework includes defining sexual harassment, understanding legal and organizational frameworks governing conduct at sea, identifying risk factors, indicators and impacts of harassment, responding appropriately to incidents and navigating reporting pathways, and contributing to a positive onboard culture and upholding professional standards.
