Life After Yachting: Helping with transitions ashore

When crew are ready to leave life at sea behind, many may find the transition to a fulfilling onshore role difficult. Finding employers who understand the transferable skills that crew possess can be a challenge. Founder of business consultancy TUVYC Titta Uoti-Väisänen experienced the disappointment firsthand during her transition when her hard-earned yachting qualifications meant very little to the world outside the industry. She has been based in Palma de Mallorca and the South of France for the past 15 years. This challenge led her to launch Life After Yachting (LAY) to help superyacht crew find success when they are ready to move ashore.

On Friday, September 18, starting at 10 a.m. CET until 5 p.m. CET, industry participants will each broadcast a 30-minute segment via Zoom — a total of eight sessions — explaining who they are, what they do, and who they are looking to work with. Companies presenting include BOND TM, ISWAN, APetchell Coaching, and more.

The one-day event is part of a larger one that runs for the month of September, where captains, crew, and businesses have been meeting and networking via Life After Yachting. The fully virtual experience contains three parts, including an online portal for crew to connect with land-based superyacht businesses and interested parties from other luxury industries, and a business incubator to help entrepreneurial crew develop their business ideas.

“The Life After Yachting portal is akin to a professional matchmaking tool that helps crew to find the best onshore connections. From crew looking for onshore work to companies looking to hire the best of the best globally, this platform presents skills and experiences obtained and required,” the press release states. “By optimizing connections, it enables both crew and companies to secure virtual meetings and online interviews.”

“Life After Yachting is progressing really well,” Uoti-Väisänen says. “We’ve had lots of talented crew registering with our online portal and talking with our supporters about the best way to make a successful move to a shore-based life. We’ve already had some interviews set up for land-based jobs and more opportunities and support is being added each week.”

The last element of Life After Yachting supports entrepreneurial crew by connected them with a team of experts who can help develop business ideas and assist in creating and executing a business plan and pitch. Crew will have the opportunity during the live one-day event to present their pitch to the “Kraken’s Den” of business advisors, who can provide crew with advice and support. The LAY support network was established for all crew pursuing a life after yachting,
