Burgess has announced the launch of its first Caribbean Crew Scholarship ahead of the upcoming Antigua Charter Show. Developed in partnership with the Antigua & Barbuda Sailing Association (ABSA) and Ondeck Training Maritime, the initiative aims to equip young Caribbean nationals with the training and qualifications needed to build careers in the superyacht industry.
The program, targeting individuals aged 18-25, covers core maritime certifications such as STCW and PDSD, along with mentorship and networking opportunities. This comprehensive approach is designed to prepare recipients for long-term roles within the sector.
This year, two recipients, Jahmarly Edwards and Junella King, were selected by ABSA for their dedication to sailing and the ocean. Both are now completing their training with Ondeck, with plans to begin work in the yachting industry during the 2024/25 winter season.
“I’m so proud to be part of this program,” said Edwards. “Seeing the real effects it’s having on the community is inspiring. It gives me hope and motivation for what’s ahead.” King echoed his sentiments, adding, “The consistent effort to make this happen is truly impactful. I’m incredibly grateful to be part of something so positive for the community.”
Jamie Small, a sales broker at Burgess, urged industry professionals to get involved: “Every winter, the Caribbean welcomes visiting yachts and crews with open arms. This is our chance to give back to the people and communities who make this region so special. We all have stories of how we got into yachting—now we can help others start theirs.”
Ondeck Maritime Training, a key partner in the initiative, co-funds the scholarships and provides the training. “The Caribbean has so much untapped talent,” said Peter Anthony, director at Ondeck. “This program gives young people the qualifications they need and connects them to a global industry.”
The scholarship program is now accepting applications for its next round, with plans to expand to other regions. “This initiative is an important step towards diversifying and enhancing the talent pool in the yachting industry,” said Ian Armstrong, Managing Director at Burgess. “We encourage captains, yacht owners, and other industry leaders to join us in supporting its growth.”
Burgess hopes it will help create a more diverse, inclusive, and skilled workforce in the superyacht industry, while also giving back to the communities that support it.
