Finalists for the 2012 World Superyacht Awards have been unveiled. After sifting through the exceptional nominees, Boat International Media’s top-notch team whittled down the contenders who now will be examined by an expert panel of judges in March to decide who will take home a coveted Neptune trophy on May 5, 2012, at the gala event, which this year will be held in Istanbul, Turkey.
The 2012 finalist list is a comprehensive mingling of both sail and motor yachts delivered in 2011. Each yacht has been placed in one of 14 categories, 10 of which will see the award go to the owner, while four are individual awards. The Achievement Award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry; the Young Designer of the Year Award recognizes an exceptional new designer in the yachting scene; The Voyager’s Award is given to an owner who has done extensive cruising and exploration in previous years; and The Judges’ Special Award. The yacht award categories are:
Best Displacement Motor Yacht of 1,300 Gross Tons and above (approx. 63m+)
Best Displacement Motor Yacht of between 500 and 1,299 Gross Tons (approx. 50-62m)
Best Displacement Motor Yacht of below 500 Gross Tons (approx. 30-49m)
Best Semi-displacement or Planing Motor Yacht in the 40m+ size range
Best Semi-displacement or Planing Motor Yacht in the 30m to 39m-size range
Best Sailing Yacht in the 45m+ size range
Best Sailing Yacht in the 30m to 44m-size range
Refitted Yacht of the Year
