How superyacht engineers are rethinking watermaker systems

For superyacht engineers, a watermaker failure isn't just an inconvenience. It's a crisis that can derail a charter, strand a vessel or force an unscheduled port call. Yet too many yachts still treat freshwater production as a standalone piece of equipment rather than what it actually is: a complete system that begins at the seawater intake and ends at the guest cabin tap.

That's where the difference between a watermaker supplier and a water-solutions partner becomes critical.

Since 1984, Watermakers, Inc. has built its reputation on reliability. The Fort Lauderdale-based, family-owned company started by producing 100-gallon-per-day units for small sailing yachts. Four decades later, it's engineering systems capable of producing 100,000 gallons per day and beyond, with a 250,000-gallon-per-day system currently in the works for a large land-based golf development.

From equipment to ecosystem

A watermaker is only as good as the system around it. Seawater quality, filtration, sterilisation, softening, storage and distribution all play a role in whether the water coming out of a tap is safe and compliant with regulatory standards. EU water-quality standards require testing according to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and non-compliance can result in delays, fines or worse.

Watermakers, Inc. approaches every project with that full life cycle in mind. The company doesn't just sell reverse-osmosis units. It supports the entire water journey, from intake to consumption, with filtration systems, UV sterilisation, water softeners, testing services, consumables and replacement parts. For engineers, that means one point of contact for the entire freshwater system, not a patchwork of suppliers with conflicting advice.

The company's hands-on approach begins before installation. Technicians visit the yacht, assess water needs and evaluate how the system can be integrated into existing machinery spaces in a way that allows for easy access and routine maintenance.

Engineering for real-world conditions

A recent refit of a 44-metre Benetti, originally built in 2009, illustrates how that approach works in practice. The vessel's aging Idromar watermakers had reached the end of their service life and the owner wanted a solution that would provide greater reliability and ease of maintenance.

Watermakers, Inc. installed two 2,200-gallon-per-day systems, giving the yacht a combined freshwater production capacity of up to 4,400 gallons per day. The team custom-fabricated a frame to securely support the high-pressure pumps and built membrane brackets specifically designed to fit the available machinery-space configuration. The entire system was engineered around the vessel's existing footprint, plumbing and electrical systems, improving accessibility for routine service while maintaining operational flexibility.

The dual-system configuration also provides redundancy, a critical consideration for extended cruising where shore-based support may be days away.

Service that doesn't stop at installation

Watermakers, Inc. backs every installation with complete life cycle support, including factory-backed knowledge and direct access to its knowledgeable team when needed. The company also maintains a service team and many parts at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club in Exuma, Bahamas - a strategic location for yachts operating in the Caribbean and along the eastern seaboard.

Importantly, Watermakers, Inc. is the only US dealer for Octo Marine and can service any major watermaker brand, not just its own. That means engineers working with legacy systems or inherited equipment can still access genuine parts, maintenance advice and troubleshooting support without having to navigate multiple suppliers or wait for international shipments.

For captains and engineers, that level of service stands out. Captain Kevin noted: "I recently used Watermakers, Inc. to service a watermaker unit on a 2020 Princess 78 that I oversee; the professionalism and immediate support they provided was exceptional."

That sentiment is echoed by those managing charter vessels that depend entirely on watermakers for crew and guest freshwater. Captain Dana also emphasised the reliability factor: "It is a situation with zero tolerance for failure as there is no alternate source of fresh water and [these] machines never let us down. [The] operator-friendly design makes regular maintenance simple and [the] technicians have been superb whenever we needed to call for help."
