Newport's blend of nautical charm, fresh seafood and sailing heritage makes it the perfect port for a crew escape.

Where to drink

The Clarke Cooke House is a Newport institution with something for everyone. Start with cocktails and waterfront views at the Candy Store or SkyBar before heading downstairs, where the legendary Boom Boom Room keeps the party going late into the night. For a proper pint, The Fastnet Pub offers a solid beer selection and pool tables, while Top of the Pelham (below) cranks up the energy with dueling pianos every Friday and Saturday night.

New Opening

Flora, which opened in June 2024 inside Gardiner House, is one of Newport’s most talked-about new spots. The hotel pays tribute to Impressionist artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, who once lived in Rhode Island, with artful Eau de Nil walls and soft pink and teal fabrics inspired by his work. The kitchen is helmed by chef Miguel Somoza, whose past clients include the British royal family and Richard Branson. Expect standout dishes like lobster tail, signature paella and scallop tiradito.

What to Do

Start your day with a stroll along Cliff Walk, a scenic trail that winds past Newport’s grand Gilded Age mansions. Beginning at Memorial Boulevard near Easton’s Beach, it takes just 30 minutes to reach The Breakers, the grandest of the Vanderbilt estates. You can also rent a bike or drive along Ocean Drive, one of New England’s most breathtaking coastal routes. And, if the sun’s shining, head to Second Beach in Middletown for a perfect day on the sand.

Classic Crew Haunts

Plenty of crew gravitate toward The Black Pearl (below), a waterfront institution known for its famous clam chowder and strong drinks. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find a mix of locals, crew and visiting sailors swapping sea stories over a dark ‘n’ stormy. If you’re looking for something more rowdy, The Landing is a longtime favorite for late-night drinks.

What to Eat

For fresh seafood, The Mooring is a must-visit. Its famed “bag of doughnuts” — crispy lobster and shrimp fritters with maple chipotle aioli — is a standout, alongside oysters Rockefeller and lobster prepared every which way: stuffed, steamed and pan-seared. And no trip to Newport is complete without a lobster roll. For the freshest catch, Newport Lobster Shack delivers a true dock-to-plate experience. This no-fuss spot serves the day’s haul straight from the boat, with picnic tables set beside stacks of lobster traps

For a casual crew breakfast or lunch, Belle’s at Newport Shipyard is a solid bet — expect strong coffee, breakfast burritos and hearty sandwiches right by the docks.
