I’m the deckhand of a vessel that’s going to the shipyard for six months. What will be expected of me? And what does this mean for the chief engineer? I’m assuming this is a busy time for them, so how can I be of help to the crew?
Shipyards are some of my favorite periods as you get to learn so much! That said, the shipyard presents both challenges and opportunities. As the yacht undergoes repairs and upgrades, you will be expected to assist with a variety of tasks revolving around maintenance and support.
You will need to be proactive in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of deck spaces as the boats can get quite dirty in the yard. This involves washing down the decks, cleaning windows and ensuring that all equipment is tidy and properly stowed. You may also be involved in painting and varnishing work.
Secondly, assisting with inspections and repairs will be a vital part of your role. This might include helping the engineering team with mechanical and electrical systems, as well as supporting any aesthetic upgrades. You may find yourself removing equipment or organizing tools to maintain an efficient work environment.
For the chief engineer, the shipyard period is likely to be one of the busiest, most stressful times. They will be responsible for overseeing all repair and maintenance projects, managing budgets and coordinating with shipyard personnel, all while maintaining the vessel’s safety and functionality.
To support your crew effectively, it’s important to communicate openly with the chief engineer and other senior crew. Ask questions and express your willingness to learn. You can also contribute by being proactive — look for tasks that need to be done without waiting for direction. This might include preparing work areas, fetching tools or assisting fellow crew.
Additionally, keeping track of supplies and equipment will be essential. Ensuring that you have everything needed for repairs can save time and streamline processes.
Ultimately, your attitude, willingness to learn and proactive approach will be invaluable. Embrace the experience, and you’ll not only contribute to the team’s success but also develop your skills significantly.
