Are laid off yacht crew eligible for unemployment compensation if they were paying taxes in America and were working on a foreign flagged yacht?

Thank you for your questionthe short answer yes.  However you will have difficulty claoiming since probably one of two situations has occurred. Either your former employer has not registered either federally or with the sate for uneployment insurance (tax) or you were paid as a independent contractor

In either case you will have to do the footw work or pay someone to do the work for you to pursue unemployment compensation for you.

It is a winniable battle but costly, and I am not sure that it is worthi it to pursue.  However one really never knows how much something like this will cost and how long you will be unemployed.  IT is a gamble on your end and thi sis one of the reasons why foreign flag boats operate in this sort of manner.,

Thank you again for your interest.  Eric Yankwitt 954-763-2829 Eric @ YankwittLaw.Com
