Fort Pierce is the only deep-water inlet between Palm Beach and Port Canaveral, making it a major commercial port that handles much of the huge volume of citrus products from the Indian River County. It is also a major recreational harbour and an essential stopping point along the Intracoastal Waterway. Many people find the down-to-earth atmosphere of Fort Pierce a pleasant change from the glitzy scene in south Florida, and Harbortown has been rated as one of the top ten marinas in the state. The marina has a major repair and service facility that includes a large indoor glassfibre and painting shop.
