Maine's largest city is still small enough to explore in a day or two. Burnt down several times and reduced to ashes, Portland was rebuilt in stone in 1866. The Old Port area balances modern commercial developments with a waterfront in a district filled with restaurants, shops and galleries. DiMillo's Marina, backing directly on to the Old Port, would be a wonderful starting point for a New England cruise, beginning in Casco Bay and heading northeast towards Camden and Penobscot Bay along the beautiful coast of Maine.
