Bahrain is the only island state in the Middle East, and this tiny country is also one of the most liberal in the Arab world. The capital is Manama and much of it is built on reclaimed land with rows of hotels and business blocks on Government Avenue. To the south is the older and more interesting area that includes the Souk, where goods of every kind are traded. Attractions of the marina include a sandy beach with watersports facilities, a fully equipped health club, and a five-star restaurant with one of the best sea views in Bahrain overlooking the harbour. A fishing competition is held annually.
