La Rochelle is a relaxed but lively city, midway down France's Atlantic seaboard, with a fast TGV connection to Paris. A pair of stone forts guard the narrow entrance to the old harbour, whose quays are lined with numerous cafés and seafood restaurants. Just outside the old port is the modern marina, Port Les Minimes, one of the largest yacht harbours in France. In September, it hosts the Grand Pavois – attracting 100,000 visitors – while each July, Les Francofolies, a music festival, fills the old town with song. A 150-tonne Travelift and refit facilities for yachts up to 90 metres are close by.
