2010 Rybovich Captains' Golf Tournament

The weather could not have been better on Friday, October 15 for the Rybovich Captains’ Golf Tournament. The annual golf outing began this year in its usual fashion with a shotgun start at noon, sending around 120 captains to the tee to show what they’ve got – or what they don’t. Sponsors brought everything from bowlines to dunk tanks to their respective holes to ensure captains were entertained throughout the course of the day, pun intended. The Dockwalk hole asked captains to face off against one another to find out who could still manage to tie a bowline, racing against the stopwatch. Some captains, such as Capt. Ken Gibson – who took home top honors after a tie-off with Capt. Joe Nolan after both tying their lines in under two seconds – proved they could still hack it, while others humbly put the lines down as they mumbled under their breath, “That’s why God invented deckhands.”  A notable mention goes out to Capt. Paul Gonzales, the only captain to pick up his line and jump rope with it…he’s given us some ideas for next year.

There was no shortage of interesting golf attire as Capt. Peter Grocock donned a WWF wrestling-style mask and Capt. Phil Burger took home the best dressed award for his psychedelic, flower-print  pants.  ISS GMT once again held the closet to the hole competition. Capt. Darren Walker teed up as other captains watched, cheering him on in support. Unfortunately, he hit the green and missed the hole.

Towards the event of the event, the wind picked up, but as one novice golfer captain said, “It doesn’t much affect those of us who have never played before.”

Around 5 p.m. all of the captains found their way to the pool deck for dinner and awards. Captains Tim Roi, Phil Burgess, David Laird and Marc Wellnetz took home last place while captains Bill Cole, Peter Williams, Barry McIntosh and Darren Walker, of closest-to-the-hole fame, won first place, shooting 61.

Then it was time for the big award… Capt. Rod Haskell, whose team won second place honors, won the raffle for the coveted Tag watch.

All in all, this year’s Captains’ Golf Tournament was a huge success and many captains will be glad they attended and spent a day relaxing on the course before the Fort Lauderdale boat show shenanigans begin in a mere two weeks.  Congrats to all of the winners and thanks to all of the sponsors: Rybovich, AvMar, Awlgrip, Dockwalk, Dockwise, Global Marine Insurance Agency, Interlux, ISSGMT, MHG, MSG, Northrop and Johnson, Scott Financial Services, Smallwoods and Yacht Chandlers.
