Crew Contest: When Life is Your Short Story

This year, perhaps more than most, the teams at The Crew Network (TCN) and Fraser have heard and shared more stories and anecdotes with their captains and crew of fun, memorable, sad, or insightful events or observations.

“Stories that have kept spirits up when perhaps they were flagging, anecdotes that have reminded us all of the common ground and goals we share in yachting,” says TCN Antibes Crewing Manager Louise Caïlbourdin. “In fact, so rich in humor, observation and experience were those stories, that we felt it was time everyone had the chance to commit them to paper, have a chance to shine, and win superb prizes as well as media and industry recognition.”

With that, the TCN/Fraser Short Story Competition was created with the theme “When Life is Your Short Story.” The competition is open to captains and crewmembers currently working aboard vessels 24-meters or larger, and the deadline to submit your story is Sunday, October 4.

The winning stories may end up on the TCN/Fraser websites, and prizes for winners include a year’s subscription to MasterClass online courses, a collection of environmentally friendly and sustainable cleaning and personal care products, and a Leatherman. Winners will be announced Monday, October 26.

While the story can’t exceed 2,000 words, it should be yachting related and can be written in any literary genre. Real or actual names of people or yachts should not be used in any part of the story, and entries must be submitted in English, proof-read, and spell-checked before submission. Entries are limited to one per person and the piece must not have been previously published or broadcast in any way.

The panel of judges to impress includes: TCN Crewing Manager Louise Caïlbourdin, Fraser Director of Marketing & Business Development Mark Duncan, Director of the MBA Program at the International University of Monaco Dr. Marika Taishoff, TCN Viareggio & Palma Crewing Manager Alessandro D’Angelo, and TCN Fort Lauderdale Crewing Manager Diane Leander. They will be looking for what they think is the best entry based on quality and originality of prose, narrative voice, and storyline.
