Hi all,
What's the best route to get on a delivery/crossing to build up more sea miles/hours. I have an AEC cert and need hours for my MEOL.
Whould also be an advantage if the boats leave from Durban or Cape Town.
Regards

In 1993, having just finished school, I joined the Cruising Association after a sailor friend of my parents recommended it as a way to go off on a sailing adventure. Being based in London it was easy for me to attend some of their monthly meetings in Canary Wharf and find a berth. I am sure that you could find something on line just as easily these days via their website. However, I should add that from my experience the vessels are mostly small sailing yachts where no pay is offered and sometimes a contribution to victualling the yacht is expected, also, most of the posts read as follows: 'lonely old 60-70 year old divorced retiree seeking young lady to help sail my yacht'. Now that viagra has been invented, be careful! Seriously, there were some great opportunities available with hundreds of yachts going all over the place, but especially now there are many crewing up for the ARC, better hurry to make that one.

I cant advise how to get on a 'crossing' or a long delivery but I do advise to make good notes when you do! If you plan to climb the qualification ladder towards Yachtmaster Ocean, a passage of over 600 miles could be your 'qualifying passage'. Make good notes about the trip: everything from watch rota to provisioning, safety drills to engine spares, time and date from port of departure and time and date of arrival. Miles in total, hours in total. Copy an extract from the log book and gain a certifying letter from the Captain that you were onboard. Be as involved as you can in the capacity as 'mate of watch'. For any other information please contact me directly or read online at the RYA site or my own school website aiguaseaschool.com Good luck and safe travels.
