According to various reports, M/Y SunChaser, a 38-meter Christensen, formerly M/Y Fifty One, caught fire on October 9, 2011, during a multi-million dollar refit at Boustead Yacht Langkawi (BYL) in Langkawi, Malaysia. Reportedly, no one was injured, but firefighters had to battle the blaze for 10 hours to be sure the fire did not spread. The incident is currently under investigation, but reports claim the fire started in the engine room.

Ouch, but not particularly surprised after a year and a bit in the region. BTW, Langkawi would be Malaysia IIRC.

The reports are true and it is a sad story. I used to work on her as mate and know it burnt down in Wave Master Langkawi (aka wave disaster). A bad ending for such a lovely boat

Well I suppose hot work could have set light to some oily grease or something. Thing is, never known so many boats go up in flames this year. Halon system turned off? What the?.... Yours ''aye Cap'n Ed

Haylen system fully charged and ready to deploy, was it used no, why, because the shipyard contacted the Captain by e mail after the boat had been burning for hours Fire brigade took over a hour to arrive on scene and little was done before they arrived to try to extinguish the fire. No greasy pipes on this boat, the engine room was virtually brand new. 8 weeks before launch after 1 1/2 years renovation

I heard it was very suspect on the side of the shipyard - has anyone heard if the boat will be rebuilt ?

"... this subject needs attention."
If you have information to share, please do. If you just want to use the forum for free advertising it is a sleazy practice that will work against you.
I for one will avoid your "firm" as I avoid creating fire hazards.

The vessel was constructed entirely in GRP. A fully engaged fire on a vessel made of plastic is impossible to extinguish, if it happens at sea, abandon ship, if it happens at the dock (or shipyard) efforts must be directed at containment/prevention of fire spreading to surrounding areas.

Chief.... read your comments, I would like to discuss with anybody and answer any questions re Fire Retardants.
My profile explains who I am and what we do and I have been transparent about that, what I am here on this site for is to perhaps discuss ways in which all responsible for vessels can Minimise Fire Risks, suggestions from experienced authorised persons who can within the community help each other with advice, their service, or other.
We can give alot of info re treating fabrics, as I am sure those that supply Fire Extinguishers or other Fire related products and services can give out worthwhile information re their specialist subject.
Its a forum, its called networking its all about people helping each other and whilst I am not sure what you do, and it would be nice to know, I am sure you can give your knowledge and experience to help us all Minimise these Fires on Vessels.
If you can contribute re all that would be great.
Ask any questions, re Fire Retardant Certification I am sure some people out there would like to know more...
Thanks for your reply.
