According to an article by the Associated French Press (AFP), pirates attacked a vessel in the Gulf of Aden, reportedly killing the skipper of the vessel, Christian Colombo, and taking his wife Evelyne hostage. She later was recovered uninjured.
On Thursday, September 8, 2011, a German warship discovered the couple's catamaran Tribal Kat adrift off Yemen. Bullet holes and bloodstains on the vessel alluded to a struggle; however, the Colombos were not on board the vessel when the German ship’s crew investigated it.
The AFP reports, “The French frigate Surcouf then detected a suspect vessel and on Saturday, the Spanish warship SPS Galicia chased it down, storming the skiff, rescuing Colombo's widow and arresting seven alleged pirates.”
Allegedly, Christian Colombo was killed in the attack and was thrown overboard. Authorities are still searching for his body.
