Favourite Crew Houses in Ft. Lauderdale

Hello! I'm headed down to Fort Lauderdale to seek my first job on a yacht. While I plan on searching job boards, interviewing with agents, and diligently doing the dock walk, I know that a crew house can be a good way to hear about opportunities. Any crew houses/hostels/other types of accommodation in Ft. Lauderdale and the South Florida region favoured? Any particular reasons? Any tips related to the job hunt are also greatly appreciated. See you there!

I am currently down here looking for work too. I have stayed at a few of the different houses and have been quiet disappointed. I am currently staying at Sam's Crew Castle and have to say that the house is by far alot nicer than the others I have stayed in. Sam is very helpful with tips and helping on the job hunt. She will even post day work on the counter for everyone to see. I have met some great people here and enjoyed it quiet a bit more than the other houses I have stayed at. Good luck on your trip down, maybe I will see you soon. you can reach Sam at guiltfree@earthlink.net.

I have stayed at Sam's house too and while its not for everyone I found Sam very helpful to those who respect the rules and do the right thing. By no means is she a stick in the mud either. I met people who I am still friends with today and we all helped each other with leads and assistance in having a drink or two together.

I have a nice clean private 1 bedroom apartment comming open sometime mid September. Great location not far from downtown, on a canal with a patio and dock out back. Perfect for a yacht captain or engineer while yacht is in the yard or for a couple or someone needing to study for maritime exams. We are yachting professions here at my residence and I am a yacht captain. All the necessary things available like wireless internet, cable, BBQ, etc. Most certainly not a party place but great for the professional. Non smokers only, no drugs. contact denfox@hotmail.com for more details.

Definitely go to Sam's Crew Castle. I will never stay anywhere else. Her email is guiltfree@earthlink.net but I can't find her phone. She will even send you tips to get started.

Crew Castle is my all time favorite. I moved there last yearr from a horrible crewhouse, so I'm already booked there for this year. She helps find work, gives tips galore, takes us to networking parties. Yeah, there are rules but they are what you'd expect on a yacht, so get used to it. The difference was NIGHT & DAY. If you can get in, go for it.

I recently stayed there while on a course at MPT (only four blocks away), and would have to agree with Anon

Definitely recommend Sam's Crew Castle. Her number is (954) 931-8945. I just left there after 2 weeks. Great people. Very helpful. Sam is awesome.

The cheapest crew housing in Ft laud is at Blue Bells Apartments on SE 15th St. Centrally located, next to Boston Market. You get your own complete apartment and can pick your roommates, or live solo. For the same price. $400/week, or $133 for 3 ppl or $80 for 5, depending on your situation... A job board is available and the owner Cathy throws socials to start off the boat show and of course each holiday. Currently under renovations, but rooms still available! Phone 954-793-8556. Please tell her Todd says "HI" and I hope to see you down there soon!

After a short stay in one crew house, which I won't name, I would recommend Sam's Crew Castle. I don't even stay at her place (yet) and she has been the most helpful person since arriving here in Fort Lauderdale. Her place is more than a crew house. She has knowledge of the industry and a lot of connections. Good luck to ya!!

I haven't gotten the chance to stay at any other crew housing in the area but I can't be on the same page with the idea that Sam's Crew Castle is the best. The people at the house are great and the opportunity to be in a house of 20-30 people is a benefit. But Sam is just a mean horrible old lady. Maybe she was jaded over the years but thats no excuse. She leaves passive aggressive notes all over the place then comes in throughout the day to scream and complain to who ever is around. Perhaps she is over it all which can be understood with some of the people that pass through? If that is the case, find someone else to manage the place. We are all adults but no one under Sam's roof is treated like an adult. The feel is more of a scary catholic orphanage with a power hungry, ruler wielding old nun. All the people are wonderful and the space is cool but spotty internet and a tyrant is almost enough to leave. Good luck out there to all..

Me and my husband have stayed off and on with Neptune group over the past 3 yrs and have always had a good experience. Its not "cheap" but I think its competitive. We have stayed in a shared apartment with one other room and we currently have been in a single room apartment the past 2 months. They are always taken care of, the cleaning crew do a great job and if there is any problem it is taken care of asap. I think its a place for responsible, respectful people. They dont take any sh*t which I think is a good thing as I like a quiet nice comfortable place... if your young and rowdy and looking for a party place they might not be your cup of tea, otherwise I highly recommend them.

I've stayed at a few crew houses in Fort Lauderdale. Each of the places I've had some good and some bad experiences, but overall, next time I think I'm going to look into staying at one of the smaller crew houses, perhaps one of the Neptune ones. The larger ones you pay the same price vs. the smaller ones and share everything with too many people.
