All was not well  earlier this week on board the luxury yacht S/Y Principessa Vaivia, once owned by the much maligned Italian Prime Minister,  Silvio Berlusconi. Now owned by Ennio Doris the President of Mediolanum, the yacht lost its main and mizzen masts mysteriously in the gulf of Asinara near Isola Rossa on Monday night.

On board the 41 metre Perini yacht were 7 crew and 8 guests including Doris’ wife and daughter. A ‘Mayday’ call was received around 7p.m. by the coast guards of Porto Torres who set out immediately to give assistance with 2 Charlie Papa patrol boats.

Captianeria sailors first attempted to tow  the yacht to Cala Reale and then Stintino  but strong winds that had been blowing all day impeded their efforts.  At 4 a.m. the next morning, the Perini was towed to the port breakwater off the industrial docks.

As dawn broke, the coastguard finally succeeded in making headway and saving seven women and one man after battling against a massive tangle of  rigging and other obstructions. Frightened and in shock, the crew and passengers were saved unscathed. They disembarked at Porto Torres and were transported to a local hotel and then driven to Doris’ private residence at Porto Rotondo.

A maritime police investigation is now underway. A statement issued by the Mediolanum group states that the masts were overhauled last spring and the rigging completely rebuilt on a boat that was built in 1991.
