A violent storm hit the island of Elba last weekend (20th-21st June). Winds up to 60 knots brought the island to its knees causing carnage and difficulties for yachts anchored at Portoferraio, Procchio and Marina di Campo. Two people went overboard. According to zerogradinord.net the first was 46 year old Luca Boncompagni but was recovered several hours later after having been swept away by the current. The accident happened while he tried to drop the sails on a friend's yacht. The second casualty, Gennaro Grillo, (47 years), was still missing on 22nd June. He had last been seen the night of the 21st onboard his tender . He was found clinging to the wreck of his small rubber dingy off the coast of the island of Montecristo. He was transferred by helicopter to hospital in Portoferraio, reportedly exhausted and dehydrated but uninjured. His disappearance was blamed on the strong currents provoked by the storm which latterly has also hit the Tuscan archipelago.
